Note from the President
Greetings from under a pile of puppies! Spring is in the air and we are thrilled to know of several Otterhound litters born this year already and several more on their way! After a banner year of puppies last year, this would typically be a down-turn year, but it appears we are on the way up. Perhaps we will soon be able to say there are approximately 400 Otterhounds in the US instead of the past 350.
As breeders plan litters, please keep in mind the OHCA Reproduction Bank, Inc. is here for YOU. We are not only a source of sires for litters, but we are also a source to store semen from the puppies you have produced. Remember to speak to your puppy buyers when their boys are around 2 years old and please recommend they have semen collected and donated to the Bank. We will be able to provide more options with more donations!
We look forward to sharing this Newsletter with you – please check out our “Playboy of June” as well as our new Tips column. We hope to become a resource for all breeders to breed healthier, happier puppies.
We are excited to roll out our Christmas in July fundraiser again – if you missed out last year or you love what you got and are hoping for more with the gorgeous OHCA Reproduction Bank, Inc.’s logo, keep an eye on your mailbox for more information.

Planning Ahead
When the clock changes in spring and fall we are encouraged to replace the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The spread of the Corona Virus should make us think about our wills and emergency plans should we have to go to the hospital suddenly.
Those of us who are surrounded by a family who love our hounds as we do, can relax knowing the humans will care for the dogs. But not all of us are so fortunate. Here are some things I have considered as a result of this pandemic.
If I had to go to the hospital without a lot of notice, what would happen to my pets? Have I told my family who to contact to come and pick them up from my home? Have I provided access to money to pay for their board and any vet care they may need while I am unable to be there? What if something happens and I can no longer care for them? What then? Have I left clear instructions of who to contact and what I want for my Otterhounds? Have I written down [email protected] anywhere?
If my male is intact and he goes to another home he might be neutered and any hope that he can contribute to the future of the breed will be lost. Please leave your friends and family the contacts for the OHCA Reproduction Bank, Inc.? Refer them to www.ohcareprobank.org and give them the email address,
[email protected], so they can talk to a representative about your wishes.
If you have frozen semen stored, why not put in your will and instructions to your family that any stored frozen semen is to be donated to the Reproduction Bank? The Reproduction bank website has forms to use to make possible your dog’s contribution to the health and viability of our breed. Twenty or thirty years from now, some lucky people may have puppies from your dog who will make them as happy as your dog has made you.
A pandemic like COVID 19 makes us all nervous and a bit scared. But it can also serve as motivation to be sure that we tell people our wishes for the future now while we are healthy and have years ahead of us to enjoy with our family, friends and our Otterhounds.

Support the bank by shopping
Speaking of the pandemic, if you use Amazon for some of your shopping, please consider making our nonprofit your designated charity. Here's a link to help you. smile.amazon.com/ch/82-0633021 On SmileAmazon, you can shop for all the items you purchase on Amazon, but a percentage from your purchase will be donated to the charity of your choice. They're able to provide this benefit to you when you choose to start your shopping at smile.amazon.com in part because they expect SmileAmazon to grow primarily through word of mouth instead of paid advertising—and this enables them to fund donations to their customers’ favorite organizations. Thanks to your shopping, the OHCA Reproduction Bank has received $93.30 since February of 2019.

Pearls from the Whelping BoxOtterhound breeders are a thoughtful group. We've asked for "pearls of wisdom" from these great folks and hope to make this a regular column in our newsletter. If any of these ideas involve food or medications, be sure to check with your veterinarian before implementation!

Always breed 2-3 generations ahead. Not only should you contemplate the advantages of a breeding for todays puppies, but also consider the options for their pups down the line as well. It will open up a world of genetic possibilities....Karmen Lange
Here is one - a rectal thermometer. Start taking daily temperatures 5 days before due date. Most cases temperature will significantly drop, indicating your bitch will go in labour some time in the next 24 hours.

If you watched the video that was posted on the Otterhound Lovers Facebook page, it shows Donna Emery (Scentasia Hounds, retired) clipping nails on her 3 dogs of different sizes (not all are OH's but the premise is the same). The important things are:
- Start them young - sometimes puppies need their nails done as soon as they're born! If not, certainly by the time they're a week old.
- Be consistent - keep doing their nails on a regular basis. New puppies need theirs done more frequently. As they get older once every 2 weeks should keep them short and in shape.
- DO NOT be nervous - your puppy/dog will pick up on that!
