Big News from the Reprobank! In February 2017 the AKC granted approval for the Otterhound Club of America Reproduction Bank. It was the first canine reproduction bank set up for the preservation of a breed approved by the AKC. Because it was the first it took time to work out all of the glitches! The Otterhound Club of America Reproduction Bank is proud to announce the first breeding from the stored semen in the bank. On June 20, 2022, a litter was born from an artificial insemination (AI) breeding of Muddcreeks Spring Harvest (Harvey) and Hunter's Riverrun Emilee Jade (Emilee). This stored semen from a male that passed in 2016 produced two little girls. |
The girls were both healthy and very lively. The larger black and tan was given the name Hunter's Ida Midnight Roamer as she was found wandering around outside the whelping box before her eyes were even open. The smaller liver and tan girl was given the name Hunter's Iris Spring Harvest in honor of her sire. They grew rapidly and by week three they were playing, planning escapes from their whelping box and sampling their first puppy mush. |
For more information about these two adorable pups, visit their website: hunterhounds.com/whats-new/ We are pleased to announce that both have forever homes.
A word from the owner of the deceased stud dog used via the Reprobank, Barb Hansen...
The entire Hansen family was so excited that Harvey was chosen to be used. He was such a sweet, goofy and handsome boy that just didn't get out into the show world enough due to the stage of life we were at (3 teenage girls). The Sonsie/Riverrun genetics deserved to live on - we are so happy that they did. We look forward to seeing how these girls grow up and what they produce.
Preservation Breeding
The purpose of the OHCA Reproduction Bank is to collect, store and distribute reproductive material from Otterhounds. For now, that means frozen semen. Every male Otterhound could be beneficial to the breed – as an owner of a male Otterhound, you should consider having your Otterhound health tested (OFA evaluated hip & elbow radiographs, a Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia gene test and blood submitted to the OFA DNA bank.) In addition to health testing, have your Otterhound’s semen collected, evaluated and frozen. Once you have his semen frozen, you can decide if you’d like to donate it to the Reproduction Bank. If you want to donate some, but not all, we welcome that and we will not allow access to what you’ve donated until you no longer have any left and your boy is no longer producing fresh semen. If you want to donate all of the semen, we welcome that as well. At a minimum, we encourage you to determine a plan for the semen, should something happen to you. If you’d like to donate it to the Reproduction Bank, we have that form on our website (https://www.ohca-reprobank.org/uploads/1/0/4/6/10467629/deed_will_gift_doc.pdf .) Please file this form with any other estate papers you may have so that your wishes are clear and known. If you’d like to use our form and leave the semen to another party, we encourage you to do so. The important lesson is to plan ahead for your frozen semen so that it is not discarded by the storage facility after you are gone.

To find a veterinarian in your area who freezes semen, you can look at this link:
https://www.therio.org/search/custom.asp?id=1107 and look for your state, canine, semen cryopreservation. You are also welcome to contact the Repro Bank and we are happy to help you find a reproductive veterinarian in your area.
We are trying to offer semen freezing at our National Specialties (and perhaps some Regional Specialties as well.) If you do not think you will be able to travel to a Specialty, please get in touch with the Reproduction Bank [email protected] and we can find a way to facilitate semen collection and freezing for your Otterhound.
